Yeah, the really old top- mount units like the GM Fridgidaire and the Westinghouse brands had a seperate motor and compressor. Loud, made tons of heat, but would freeze a boiling pot of water in no time.

Interesting... out of curiosity I looked at the unit in our basement, and it's a "hotpoint" brand unit. I'd give you the model number except that's on the back and it's pushed against the wall, full to the top, therefore unmovable at the moment.

It definately has a belt... a v-belt actually... which I replaced with a gates belt I got from an auto parts store since auto stores are happy to sell belts based on length, whereas appliance stores need the model and serial number, which would require emptying it and moving it. See, I have access to a panel on the right side which gives me access to the belt/motor/compressor. Barely enough to get my arms in there...

Too bad I didn't know you sooner Fell, I was strugging with the wiring of some unknown, barely marked washing machine motor which I figured out through trial and error lol.

Yeah, well, that happens. BTW, should you ever get into recycling for dollars, the place local to me pays pretty good. I found a massive dumpster full of steel shelving, and made about 10-12 trips, 1000lbs or so per trip (that's all that fit into the bed without sliding out if I accelerated or turned). $450 for a morning's work. I had planned to keep going until the metal recycling place closed but I slipped off the top of the dumpster and landed on my ankle in a real bad way, which now looks like a basket ball with five toenails.

At least I didn't land on my head.

It's a shame because I had permission to take it all, and aside from the dumpster being full, there were four 6'x6'x6' high pallets of the shelving they were more than happy to forklift into the back of my truck after lunch - all for free!

Except I can't drive at the moment (or walk, or stand) and the dumpster has been removed by the carting company
