Front Hub Assembly ?

Ok after reading just about every thread I could possibly find I need to put this out there to find a general idea of who likes what? I have a 2000 F-250 4-door Lariat Super Duty 5.4, and am looking to replace the front hub assembly on both sides. I have the manual locking hubs on the outside and the turn switch inside to engage 4 wheel drive (yeah I know I am a newbie here and don't know how to describe it any better than that). Everyone on this site is excellent on telling newbies how to do stuff. I am mechanically inclined on how to do repairs just not how to describe them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. THANKS to all who run this site it is AWESOME!

I think you mean you have auto locking hubs with a manual overide
esof didn't come with a straight manual hub.
Unless someone changed them already.

What is wrong with the hubs you have?

To change the hubs or repalce them is not difficult
Just a snap like spring clip and a rubber mallet and the hub should pop out ,a little wd 40 or pb blaster will help

There is a tech area here that has pic of how to do it
Chk it out

Well your hubs work on vacuum .
If you look behind the wheels you will see a vacum line going to the knucle
Make sure they didn't fall off or the lines get broken.
Also the hubs have seals in them that seal the vacum pulse to pull the hub locked or release it.
Have you verified that you are out of 4x4 ?
Quick chk is to see if you can turn the front axles behind each wheel.

Think I am out of 4x4?

I have crawled under and tried to turn axels, not workin, have looked at lines everything looks connected, in the cab all systems go, no 4x4 light on , switch at 2wd wheels still turnin, just wondering about Warn, Milemarker or Super Winch, or whatever to replace stock hubs?

thanks, Tim

Sounds like your hubs are locked when they shouldn't be. Mine did that, locked when they shouldn't be, unlocked when they should be locked.

Try this. Go on dirt. Drive a few 10's of feet, turn the ESOF **** to 4x4.

Stop. Turn the key to OFF. Turn the ESOF **** to 4x2.

Start truck back up, see if the axles will turn.

I think you need new hubs. I used Warns, others have used Milemarkers. From what I've read here, they are both just as good. See what each will cost locally or on the Internet.

Let us know what happens!

Stuck hubs are common with the SD's amd X's. These should be maintained more often. Warn (premium) is a real quality piece. Hold them in your hand, and compare to the comprtition, you will see (feel) what I mean. I used Dynatracs complete free spin front hub conversion kit, and have been very pleased. Having servicable hubs / bearings and 35 spline outers made for an easy decision. The factory units are just too expensive to replace.

I would like to remind everyone that the part you're talking about should be called hublocks. The hubs carry the weight of the vehicle down to the wheel. The hublocksuuii can be removed pretty easily by taking off the hub or wheel cover, then removing the wire retaining ring with a pliers, and using a deadblow hammer or a block of wood, to give the hub locks some movement to the side, until they are loose enough to be pulled straight out.

I had a similar problem on my 99 SD, one hub worked fine and the other was locked all the time. Ended up the needle bearing in the hub assembly had taken a dump and welded itself to the axle. So I ended up replacing the hub assembly, the axle assembly, and put WARM Premium lock outs on it.

Make sure that the axle shafts are not cocked in the hub assembly, and I hope it isn't for your sake.

Hope you have better luck than me.

Talking Hubs Unlocked!

Hello to everyone again just a quick update on the ongoing hubs locked problem. I did what "Krewat" suggested and drove on gravel for about 50 feet with the ESOF in 4x4 then stopped turned the truck off, turned the ESOF to the 4x2 position then started the truck back up and what do you know both hubs are now unlocked and the axels are spinning free. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Still am figuring on replacing the hubs with aftermarket though.

Thanks again
Tim

It appears the system knows what position the ESOF switch was in last time you had the key on. It doesn't know when you turn the **** when the key is off

When it got to the point where I had to do this "turn the **** with the key off" thing, it marked the beginning of my ESOF hub problems. I did all the vacuum diagnostics, made sure everything was working well, no vacuum leaks, nothing. It was the hubs themselves not locking or unlocking when necessary. I actually had one hub locked, and the other unlocked. Turn the ****? The first one unlocks, the other one locks! What fun.

I had no vacuum leaks, everything else was working correctly, just my perfectly clean and lubed hubs acting like they had a mind of their own.

Oh well, the Warns do what I TELL them to do.

I plan on keeping my '01 a long time - I'm already planning on what to stick in the dash to replace the ESOF **** after I go to a manual transfer case

I'm kidding. Maybe.

My front end was thumping quite hard was not in the brakes or tiers as far as i can tell...Finally pulled the hubs out and they were rusted and said needle bearing inside was quite dry...hubs from ford dealer were about 360each canadian lets say i craped my self on that one ...never thought to look at aftermarked ones oops..thumping was in the needle bearing that centers the axle shaft in the front hub bearing assembly...

That needle bearing is about $15US. It can be replaced.

I've done it. I had to spend a few hours re-surfacing the axle stub, but still going strong 2 years later.

Krewat is right, I got another 150,000 or so out of mine, after replacing the needle bearings, before I had to finally replace the hubs.
