Im hearing a nasty whine from the front driver side of my 03 Explorer right around 80 kmph. Especialy when slowing down. It sounds to me like the transfer case but i can't be sure. Has any one else had this problem or have any ideas what it could be???
I wish I could help, but I am experiencing the same noise. Just started a couple of days ago. My noise comes after a few miles to warm up and the starts only when declerating or coasting...it also feels like the front end is "surging" when this happens or I am driving over something. I checked the fluid level of the front differential and it seemed ok. The manual calls for mercon atf fluid, but the fluid that's in there looks more like a gear oil and was a little "cloudy" come to think of it.
whine noises are mormally a bearing. i had a whine in the back end of my 2002 a few weeks ago. jacked up the rear wheels a coupel ilnches off teh ground. took of tires, took off brake caliper and disc to eleminate any squeek when turning alxe. turned each side real slow listeneing to ball joint and CV joint each side. it was definitlly rough turning on one side. took the hub and bearing off on that side to replace them. the bearing had two spall marks on the bearing race. i think you could do the same on the front end to narrow down the possibility. i had also thought of removing the drive shaft and turning to see if i heard anything in the differential.--------- i was not being pickly about the gear oil- gear lube. my comment was directed at using MERCON in the differential. that is not a good idea. maybe you were taling about the transfer case.
