I'm looking to get a 2000ish F-150 extended cab or crew cab xlt(possibly lariat) 4wd. I would also like the tow package and the 5.4.
Is there anything that I should look for in these trucks?
Any call backs on them, a/c problems, engine, tranny, t case, axles?
Also what is a average price range for anyone from around 2000 with anywhere from 50,000-90,000 miles?
i just bought a 99 f-150 lariat, 4x4, extended cab with 5.4 for 14,200.
i've been driving a 92 ford ranger for 8 years and I was overdue for an upgrade.
i love my new truck, so far.... oh yeah 59,500 miles.
Look for 3.73 gears if possible, if not 3.55's will do.
Check the a/c hose assembly. Mine was assembled too far forward and rubbed the fan shroud and rubbed a hole in it. It was repaired under warranty. The a/c guy said that he had seen a few this way. It is where the line loops around and back to the compressor.
My 01 has been a great truck so far, it now has 64,600 or so miles on it. I have no need for leather seats, so I got the XLT OFFROAD 4x4 with a 5.4L, 4R70W trans, shift on the fly 4x4, and 3.55LS rear. I will change to 4.10's if I ever get rich. The 17" tires kinda kill the gear ratio. I can do 80mph at about 2050rpm.
Check the ball joints, check for a leaky rear window, check for cracks in the door frame by the windows (above the handles), rear axle bearings, and even the spark plugs and wires, as Ferds are very picky about what you use....
I'm kind of looking at a 01 crew cab lariat 4x4 with the 5.4 also it has 61,000 miles on it and they're asking $17,900.
I called the guy today and found out the miles, price, and that it had 2 previous owners. I was looking at it yesterday, and saw there was no leaks from anything underneath. The rear end has the tag on it and I could see the first number, but the next 2 looked like a 75. I don't think the tags are the same as my 70s trucks, but would that mean 3.75 or I'm completly wrong.
I saw it had the reciever hitch, tow hooks, and 5.4, but not sure if it has the 3.73s, but I'm hoping.
I'll go check for all the leaks previously mentioned when I go look at it again.
Anything else to look for?

That truck will have the 9.75 rear end and 3.73s. Sounds kinda high on the price though.
I though it was high too, but it is a lariat 4 door with 61,000 miles, so I can understand why they're asking that much.
He did say they could work the price, but what should I be looking for for this truck? 16?

Easiest thing for me to say is look at my thread a few post down.
Watch out for Katrina damaged vehicles, but being from Louisiana, I guess you know all about that. Also, the 2003 5.4s have additional threads in the sparkplug holes to avoid the "sparkplug launching" issue, the 2000's did not. However, 61K on a 2000 vehicle is low mileage, and if the overall condition is good, with no flood damage, go for it.
Look for the rust on the inside of the doors. 22k miles and mine had it. not to mention the leaky transmision seal to the transfer case. Maybe the cracked paint on the roof gutters. And the idler arm that holds the transfer case in place is shot (or something, the dealer told me about it). All of these issues the dealer said there is no TSB or recall.
Thanks for the advice guys, I test drove it the other day for about 15 minutes, and parked it, and then went talk to the guy about the price, and he told be alittle over $18,000 with tax.
How does that sound for a very well kept up truck?
Anyway, after I talked to him, I went check for leaks, and nothing was there. I stayed under there for about 2 minutes just looking at everything. All looked good, but I still would like ya'll opinion on the price? Oh, by the way, it has 3.55 gears, I checked the rear end again. Not what I wanted, but I could deal with it.

Autotrader.com and see what they are selling for in your area. I'd never pay $18k though.
Actually I looked at all of the 4x4 trucks on there site with in 100 miles of my zipe code, and only one in the same catagory was cheaper, and that was before tax and it had twice as many miles(120, over the 60).
BUT I did see alot of extended cabs that looked to be pretty good, but at around $11-14K. What price sounds good for a extened cab 4x4 xlt with decent miles?
