86 LTD I might buy

Anyone have an opinion on this car?

My daughter may end up getting this for her first car. We found it this evening for $500. Is this a fox bodied car like the Fairmont or Futura? I like the idea of maybe putting a Mustang drivetrain or suspension on it after my daughter is done with it. This car has the 3.8 v-6, auto, tilt, power, cruise, and is straight. The paint may be able to be buffed out, the interior is great and it really looks like a good deal.
Anyone have any info. on this car?
Thanks...

bodabdan I had an 88 ltd crown vic a few years back. We got it for my nephew but he complained about its gas use... it did have a 302 in it. So I started driving it as a second car and loved it. especailly when I went golfing. 3.8 not a bad motor. I think this would be a great first car. For your piece of mind it is big and heavy==== less chance of injury in case of accident. I would buy if I needed for my daughter....... now all I need is a daughter. I do have three grand nieces and two grand nephews. but the first one has 9 more years....

I have had two 86 LTD's. Not bad, but the it tends to go through a lot of oil.

Both of them leaked oil from the valve covers and dripped on the block,

causing a neat smoke screen effect when driving down the road.

That's the Fairmont-sized LTD, right? Not the larger one we know as the Crown Vic?

I apologize did not realize there was a difference in the model years. Guess I will go to ebay or google to see what one looks like.

Those little LTDs and Marquis are kinda few and far between any more, don't see many of them. There's still quite a few of the larger Crown Vics/Grand Marquis around though. Don't know if that's a sign of how well the smaller ones (didn't) hold up or not, or if just not that many people bought them. They are basically a dressed-up Fairmont. The 3.8 V-6 in the small LTD is about equivalent to the 302 in the Crown Vic from what I've seen but I've never trusted a 3.8 quite as much as I would a 302, especially after 20 years.

Thanks for the replies. It is the small LTD, and looks alot like the Fairmont. Does anyone know if this car is a "fox" body or not? I think it looks like one, but I don't know for sure. Going to probably buy it tonight.
