ses light on

I am working on buying a 2001 f-250. The ses light is on and it has no power. Is there a code scanner that I can buy at a local parts store that will read the codes on a 7.3L without spending more than 150$? I don't even know if the ses light is what comes on if something is wrong. Do the diesel trucks have a check engine light? someone please help me I'm all new to the diesel world.

It is refered to as a MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lanp) this week any way. Some autozones have scanners that will read our trucks most do not since they are outside ODB II weight requirements. Make sure the scanner can read enhanced code packages.

What do you mean when you say "No Power" is it like the truck wont get out of its own way?

Getting out of it's own way is putting it lightly. It won't even rotate the tires as soon as you let the clutch out is stalls and that's in low gear.

You are going to have to get the codes to narrow down where to start on that one. Does it idle OK (no major missing our knocking)

it idles rough when it's first started but then it smoothes out. It does seem to have a miss but no knocking or pinging in the engine like it's going to blow up or anything.

just a couple of things to check before you get the codes would be, Blown intercooler boots, restricted exhaust (Crushed or clogged pipe), dusted turbo, engine oil level (also last change), if you jack up the rear end and put it in nuetral will the tires rotate by hand?

It could be fuel deffinately check the filter and bowl for trash. I was just starting off with some of the visual inspection items that will kill power. but there are alot of sensors that can also do this

I'll check everything I can visually before I have it put on the computer. Worst case what could be wrong with it and how much would it cost to fix?

Sounds like something is either not getting enuff fuel pressure to the engine to do more that idle or the HPOP is not building enuff pressure to drive the injectors faste than idle

it will rev up but it takes about 30-45 seconds to get it to reach 3300 rpm.

Just a guess but sounds like HPOP not building pressure fast enuff. Could be ICP sensor, IPR, or HPOP itself. First two arent that bad BUT HPOP is a little pricey
