which posi/locker?

I have a 1996 F 150 with a 351 W 4X4 and auto.
I am going to change 3.08 to 3.73 axles. I think I will put in some positraction
in the rear only. This will be used mostly on the street with some towing of open car trailer. But in Minnesota in the winter we need all the help possible.
I am going to stick with near stock tires. I need advice on which unit to install.
I thought Torsen, but did they quit? I have had Detroit Lockers and liked them?
What you advice?

Detroit lockers have a loud clicking noise as the gears disengage turning corners or following the raod when both wheels turn at a different rate. Not so bad if you want to have a lot of traction all the time. For pulling a trailer I would suggest the limited slip. It gives you extra pulling when you need it without all the clicking.

Yeah, you don't need a locker for the conditions you're talking about. A limited slip will be fine, but if you don't have some weight in the back of that truck, you're going to end up in the ditch on a snowy night. With a limited slip, both rear wheels are spinning and there is literally nothing holding the rear end in place. At least with an open carrier, you have that one wheel helping you out.

Well then, I got me a heavy duty girl friend I could put back there.
Then she wouldn't be all sweaty when I bring her back home!

Torsen is still manufactured. In fact, it comes stock on a lot of vehicles, including the Ranger FX4 Level II. See http://www.torsen.com/

A lock right or aussie locker would do the same as a detroit for half the cost, and they aren't quite as loud(the aussie locker is very quite, I have one in my front D44).

Eaton makes an EXCELLENT clutch type limited slip for an 8.8" rear.
