a/c problem how to fix

Hello,

I have a 2000 ford F-150 2wd. I checked the low pressue side and their is freon in the system. I watched the ac compressor and the clutch goes on and off. My unit is not blowing cold air. Does anyone have any suggestions of what do do next. Can I fix the Clutch? or do you buy a new compresor? If not where do you buy the clutch?

Thanks

Mike

the clutch will cut in and out if you have way too much pressure or very low pressure. like stuart said, you need to know the freon pressures. should have about 30 psi on low and 275 on the high side. you might just be low on R134. can you trun the temp control on the dash and feel the heater air and outside air temp changges?

Checked Pressure, Now What?

Hello,

I just bought a real set of guages with low and high pressue. The other gauage was just a low pressure one. When I tested this time with the AC on. The low pressure read 15 - 40 psi when the engine cylce and 70 - 115 psi on the high side. Should I add freon. What is the best thing to do at this point. And when I add freon how should i read the gauges at the high side or the low. Finally How much freon should I add.

Thanks

Mike

sounds to me like you have a leak. the low side should stay at 30 ish and you start to get real cool air out of the vents. ford spec for temp is 40 to 45 degrees, center vent at medium high blower speed. if the pressure on the high side does not go to 270 or higher then you are okay with restrictions in system or damage. with the compressor cycled on you low side should go down to 30-40 range and stay, if it cycles off prematurely and your high side does not spike then you are low on refrigerant

i just checked mine a couple weeks ago. basically if it 85-90 degress ouside, your compressor might run continuously or close to it. as Bow said, the low side will stay at 30-35 psi, the high side should be under 300, but mine runs 325 psi. you are suppose to set the temp on MAX and hold engine at 1500 rpm for the test. ideal the air at the vent should be 40 degrees. mine is more like 52. i figure someone added a little freon in the past and got a little air in the hose so i have a slight contamination??? maybe thats why the pressure is up a little and the temp output is 52??

steve, what kind of vehicle do you have?

high pressure usually means a restriction or excess heat in the system

i have a 2001 supercrw with 5.4 motor. thought about the orifice being restircted, but i think that would give me low low side pressure and high high side pressure. my low side is o.k. i did have 45 psi low and 400 high, i took some out to get back to 30 and 325. apparently someone has done some work on the AC prior to my purchase last summer. i cnat say for sure what the problem is, i am not that much of an expert on the system. started checking things when i noted the air temp was 50-55 degrees.

make sure the cooling system is working properly. pressure wash the front of the truck where the condensor is so you know it is free of dirt and dead birds lol. take your truck to a shop with a ac machine to get them to check it. if you had to let some out it may be just a state of overcharging in the system. right now alot of these places are doing free ac checks or even if you have to pay for it, it still may be a simple fix.
