Hi all, I am brand spanking new here and have a question for any of you to answer, please.
I have a loose dashboard(on passenger's side)that is driving me crazy and is also probably going to get worse unless I get at it now. I have taken the glove box off to try to find a way to see what is loose and needs tightening or some clue as to what may be the problem, but no luck.
It is a 1993 F-150,4.9L, 6 cylinder 4x4 pickup. It has about 97,000kms. on it and is in pretty darned good shape. I bought it about 3 years ago from an older lady whose husband was in a nursing home and she wanted to get rid of it as she had no real use for it anymore. She drove it to and from town(farmers markets).
Anyways, I am not the most mechanically inclined person but would like to do this job myself if at al possible.
I cant recall for sure but if you look/ feel around under the hood , the heater and air box you should find some screw/bolts that hold it to the firewall. check to see if any are loose or missing, and do the same under the dash. just go ahead an tighten everyone anyway as to eliminate them one by one.
chances are someone/dipstick may have changed the heater core ( didnt know what they were doing)and left some screws loose or out. some of them are a booger to get to.
I have heard this happen before, that is why I come here and do things myself.
If I remember correctly, there is a mount on the pass side dash. You may have to remove the kick panel on that side. I have heard of people fabricating new brackets and also that Ford itself sells an improved bracket. This is a known problem and if you do a search you may come up with more answers.
Hope I helped a bit.
This is a common problem with these trucks, as alz said there is a bracket on the passenger side that for whatever reason was made out of plastic and with the bouncing these trucks take going down the road it breaks. My 93 has done it and a friends 94 Lightning has as well as several trucks at work. Don't know about the improved bracket but it is possible to fab a new one out of metal.
From FORD you get one steel, double angle bracket, three pop rivets, and a set of installation instructions all in a box.
Yes they did have to order it and it cost $18.72 plus Tax for a total of 20.09 as of 11/04/05.
Took about two days to get it and with out this number they did not know what I saw talking about. Part # F4TZ-1504366-A
I am very impressed with the awesome response to my plight.
I checked where you guys thought the problem to be, et voila, exactly what you said. A broken plastic bracket. Thank you all for your help and also for the part #.
I will head to Ford on Monday and see what they have in stock or have it ordered.
I looks like it might be a little awkward getting to but will manage I am sure.
