1997 with problem 4x4 not locking inn help

1997 f150 4x4 the truck starts clicking bad in the dash when i tri to lock it in i need some help can turn truck of and leave it switched to 4x4 and sometimes it will lock in after a lot of clicking help

"clicking" sounds like bad relay(s) to me, id check those first.
