I have an 89 Bronco II I have installed Explorer front coils and rear leafs,I gained a modest 1'' 1/2. I do moderate wheeling and would like to go a little higher what is your guys opinion on body lifts?
is your BII a daily driver?
if so do not use a body lift, for moderate wheeling the 1.5 lift should be enough.
get good all terrain tires or mud terrain tires and some good offroad shocks and you should do fine.
body lifts will only raise your center of gravity, unsafely. plus the BII has a short wheelbase.
if you need bigger tires, bushwacker may still make fender cut outs to fit larger tires, if you still need more ground clearance.
also you may want to add traction aiding devices in your differentials for better off road capabilities.
most of all driving technique is important while wheeling, just go out and practice.
forget the body lift.
I don't see a problem with a body lift if you're on a budget and not a crazy driver. Sure it raises your COG, but so would a suspension lift. If your suspension components are all good (not failing) you should be fine. You might also want to cut your fenders (it you're willing to do that, I couldn't cut into mine lol) to give your wheels a little more articulation room. Personally I would save up a little money to get a suspension lift kit rather than a body lift. Just my opinion on that though.
I'm not a fan of body lifts, like as been stated, raises the center of gravity. Also the gap between the body and frame, and body and bumpers can be an eye sore. For moderate wheeling, run you a set of BFG at ko's, about a 30/9.50, lock those diffs, at least one (detroit tru-trac is a good gear driven lsd) and you'll be crawling all over the place.
I have the jc whitney 3" body lift on mine. I like it and have not noticed any ill effects. As long as you understand that it is not a sports car and will not corner like one. Like everyone else has said there is a bit of a gap, no worse than looking at a truck bed though. I reused the rear gap plastic. I just heated it up and bent it flat so it fills the gap pretty decent. I am now running 31x10.50's they rub a bit in the rear on full compression on the trails, but have noticed no rubbing in turning in the front. I also like the way the front looks now. on the 85 there is a filler panel in the front. Now with the body lift there are notches where the panel used to sit over the frame. It looks cool and I am considering mounting some tow hooks there.
I appreciate the input guys, not sure but I think I will save for a suspention lift.
I think the idea of a locker and running 30.950 or 31.1050 tires would be a great idea.
I would love a suspension lift myself, only problem is it costs alot of money, and I am still trying to upkeep the basics. Check out my gallery it should give you a good idea what it would look like. I'm sure you know a body lift only clears bigger tires and does not give you better articulation.
