Make sure that the shift rails are all lined up. There should be three of them, make sure the place where the shifter engages the rails is centered on all three in the forward/backward direction, i.e. that the transmission is in neutral.
After much more effort, I have deciphered that it is a TOD transmission and it appears that the 1/2 and 3/4 rails are lined up, The arm/ spring for reverse is farthur forward,
The stick will seat nicely in the middle rail but will not move.
Does this sound like things are still just not lined up or is there something seriously wrong?
Does any one have any experince w/ taking the tops off this tranny?
I am also posting in the transmission forum, but the help there is sad compared to you guys.
on my '94 f150 with the M5OD tranny i was replacing the plugs on the back of it and had to take the top of the tranny off, when i was done and ready to put the shifter back on i could only get it to go into the neutral position, even thogh it was in first when i pulled the top of the tranny off, so i pulled the top of the tranny back off to check and makesure everything was lined up, it was. then put the top back on and tried to put the shifter in it would still only go in neutral and not move (btw i knew the truck was in 1st because i could push it and it wouldn't move). at this point me and my dad kept trying to wiggle the shifter back in to first but it wouldnt go no matter what we did. eventually he poured a couple ounces if tranny fluid in the shifter hole in the top of the tranny, then i jiggled the shifter and it went right into first where it was supposed to go.
so, since you got everything lined up, you might want to try pouring just a little fluid down the top hole in the tranny w/ the shifter out, then immeditaly put it in and wiggle it, it might sound weird but it worked for us.
Btw: this is with an M50D tranny which takes mercon ATF, im not sure what kind your TOD takes but if its real thick grease like lube, i dobut what i said above will work for you.
I have a TOD as well in my 87. You should be able to make the reverse shift rail go to the neutral slot using a screwdriver - just pry it back into position. I've had this happen before and once you get the three rails lined up, it should go back in, no problem. I filled my transmission with 80W90 gear lube.
