Working on changing the plugs for my 98 Navigator.
I bought some new COPs on Ebay and started on the job yesterday(never done it before). When I pulled the first COP, I noticed that there is a little metal piece on the end of the COP spring(inside the boot). The new COPs I bought do not have this... there is only the metal spring.
I assumed that the spring just went over the head of the spark plug.
Do I need this metal piece? Is the spring on plug good enough?
Please shed some light on this for me... not sure if I should continue as is.. or find new "metal pieces".. or use the old ones or what?
Well I pulled the COP from #1 which was changed by a mechanic around 15K miles ago and it has just a spring going over the plug. I'm guessing this is ok. Wish someone that's "been there done that" could confirm for sure.
So I proceeded to work on #5 (where I started previously) and pulled the plug. It's different from the replacements O'reilly's gave me. It's a motorcraft AWSF 22E and O'Reilly's gave me AGSF 22WM. Hmmm.... better call O'Reilly's...
By the way... the gap on this old 125k mile plug is about .80 and it's caked with debris. Guess you could say these plugs really need changing.. lol

*EDIT* Called parts store. The plug I have is just a little "hotter" heat range. That's fine with me. It's not like I'm running Nitrous on this thing... heh heh
Can anyone answer his question for me? It's apart in the driveway now and I have the same question. Factory spring has a contact on the end new one looks like a spring on both ends with something in the middle. Help?!
