Good Morning
I am looking at a F650 to convert to an RV hauler. I also haul some Hotshot loads. I have heard so many war stories on the Ford 6.0 that I thought a Ford with a Cummins would be a better truck. My 5'r weighs about 22K. I am a full timer and want a safe truck that is dependable and one that I won't tear up with the weight. Does anyone have any experience with a 2000 F650 with a 6 speed allison tranny? Is this a dependable combination? I am getting way to old to be stranded in the heat. I want to stay under CDL weight. What is a good rear end ratio for hauling but also for the mileage?
Any opinions appreciated
Thanks
Pam
The F650 is a real work horse. As you indicated, the Cummins is a fine engine as is the Allison transmission. I believe it is only available in the 650's and larger.
The ride in that truck will be extremely firm and an air suspension system may be in the cards for you. Be sure and drive it over some railroad tracks or pot holes before you buy it! I would take a Cummins over a 6.0 anyday.
Gearing will be quite low. Do they have a 2 speed rear end? That would help with economy. I doubt it would ever get more than 8 mpg though. The 6.0 in a lighter 450 or 550 would only tow at 10-12 with that much weight (22K)anyway.
Over at The Diesel Stop they have a General Diesel section forum. You may get more accurate answers over there.
I have driven many of these trucks. I agree air ride all the way go with air ride seat also and try to find one with what they call a kick up frame or what they call a proloader option this will lower the dock hight by quite a bit. I know alot about these trucks if you have any more questions Pm me. Hope I can help.
I run a 650 and a 750 . Both have the allison and the CAT engines. Both trucks are 5 to 7 yard dumps with spring suspensions. Love them both, some of my drivers say they like them better than there pick ups.
