modulator question

okay hopefuly get some help here I have a 1980 ford f 150 4 x4 with a 351 windsor, c6 automatic and 4.11 gears. The truck originaly came with a 302 and standard trans i converted it over. The c6 was out of a 1984 ford f 250 with a 351 w and 3.50 gears

The c6 in it has been rebuilt and also has a new valve body, servo, modulator, and governor. Sometimes when you stop it doesnt like to drop down to first gear and when you start off again it will start out in secound.

Im wondering if it could be the modulator i had just gotten one from the parts store and you have to adjust it. i hear the ford ones are pre set so wondering if i should go to that? The other question is i know they go by stripes on the modulator but with gear changes and such do i just go with the modulator originaly from the c6 or ? it was a green or yellow stripe.

any help would be very very apreciated

I got your PM smallblock, and responded to it. But for others stay with the one that came on the tranny, they are more year specific than anything. I prefer the adjustable ones myself but they can be a pain to get right at first but they are more adjustable so you can get them really dialed in.
As to the not shifting into first gear at a stop, it's almost always a sticking valve in the VB, and the best advice I can give is take it out, and clean it real, real good with brake clean (this will involve tearing it down, so don't lose track of the check *****, and where they go or the springs and valves for that matter) Also check each valve and make sure they are smooth in the bores, I will even polish them a little with emory cloth, and bevel the edges just slightly but make darn sure to keep all the dust out of the valve body and clean them off real well when your done.
Also replace the filter and installing one inline in the cooler return line or as a bypass filter helps keep this problem from happening.

No expert here but had enough problems with my C6...Mostly caused by my own self...But I let a tranny sit empty of fluid for six months...Then I had to adjust the Band adjuster to 10-12lbs 1/4 turn if I remeber correctly.....Same thing was happening to me...Sometimes from a stop I would be in 1st but mostly like 2nd...I did a band adjustment and was able to spin the crap out of the tires....Worked for me...Id double check the band torque settings

band adjustment is actually 120in/lbs then back off 1-1/4 turns.

anybody think it could be linkage adjustment?c6's will take off in manual 2nd and if theres slop or worn bushings in the shifter/linkage it could cause problems.

Bronco521, I know what your saying but in this particular situation I don't believe it's linkage. Thats not to say it couldn't be in some situations but I don't beleive so here.
