Hi all! New here so please bear with me. Quick question that I though I already knew the answer to. I bought a new set of tires for my `94 250 SC 4x4 and was told by the tech it couldn`t be aligned because of rod end wear. Took it home and did the standard checks and found that under steering load and prying with bar(end play) that there is substantial play. Because rod ends are spring loaded to keep the ball in contact with the socket, the play isn`t noticable with the front end off the ground unless you pry in on the socket towards the mounting stud. I always assumed there shouldn`t be ANY end play in a rod end in good condition. My regular garage doesn`t see a problem with it and would pass it for inspection as is. Someone is full of crap and I`m not sure who. Comments, suggestions?
I take it your talking about tierod ends .
there should be no movement other than a tight alowable rotate on its axis ball.
anything more and it should be changed,
they are a $50 dollar or less item ,I'd rather safe and on the road than in the ditch with a broken tierod end.
they are 100% worn out if there any motion at all along the axis of the TRE's bolt. As mentioned, there should ONLY be rotation.
I guarantee if you pop them off, and play with it compared to a brand new one, you'd see an enormous difference. You typically can't even move new ones by hand.
