Any reason why the ABS light would come on? 99 350 CC Diesel dually- I can't read a code with my Diablosport tuner, is this something I gotta take to the dealership? I don't drive too stupid, but I do drive in New York City, do bad roads keep this damn light on? I don't have any trouble stopping.
My OD light was blinking for about 2 minutes last week. As soon as I started the truck it happened, even before I put it in gear. Then the ABS light stayed on two days ago. No problems with the speedo. Should I change the VSS just to be on the safe side? I've read these things are prone to failure.
It sure would not hurt anything to go ahead and swap it out. I am getting ready to do mine as well.
I picked one up for about $23 from my local dealer's parts department.
If you know where it goes, you can take care of it easily- if not, go down to the 1999-2003 7.3L Diesel forum and do a search on 'VSS' and you'll get a couple of threads with pics that will detail it for you.
The Speed sensor is cheap, and easy to replace, but could easily be one of the front wheel sensor as well. I burned up a bearing, and killed a sensor not too long ago. These are simple to change out as well. Btw, clean the tone rings up front also.
There is a sensor, and a reference to make this system function. Quite simply, the tone ring is ring that is fixed to the wheel,(or differential) and as it rotates, will give feedback to the sensor indicating wheel speed. The rear one is located inside of the diff. Since the speedo is working, and the truck shifts well, this is probably fine. Now to the front, look inside each of the wheelwells, and notice the wires running to the back side of the spindles (2x4, or 4x4), the same applies. Start off by verifying that all connections are good, and none of the wires / connectors have come undone. I wiil look for a thread or a link for disassembly of your unit, as the rotor more than likely has to be removed. Brake dust and other crud can contaminate the ring, and prevent feedback to the sensor, giving you the ABS light. Is your truck 4-wheel drive?
Piece of cake, back when I had a 99 dually V10, I had the same problem, turned out I had some mud all up in the sensor, and the plug. Cleaned it out, and everything was fine. Now I keep them clean on my new SD, as well as the wifes Excursion. Did you get a chance to look for the wires in the wheelwell? They are noticeable by the shock, and they will attatch to the top of the inside of the knuckle. These can be purchased at your local auto supply. Check the connections, and check for clean, (high pressure garden hose should work) It is possible that one or both has gone bad, but I believe that your problem lies in one of these sensors.
Good luck.
Ah good (bad) to see I'm not the only one. My case is a little different in the fact that it only comes on when I am towing. Once the trailer I have hooked up is disconnected and I have turned off the truck it goes away eventually. It might stay on for 20 or so miles after disconnect but it does eventually go away. First incident was at 6084 miles and it just did it agian starting at 7030 miles. Bummer is its on a new 06 Lariet. For $50K figure it wouldnt have these little issue. Other bummer is the closest dealer is 13 hour round trip. I will take a look at the sensors to see if they are dirty but wierd that it only comes on towing.
mlb4966: Does your problem occur when you are towing on a slippery road? Could this be an accurate ABS light due to some wheel speed differences while braking? The ABS might have engaged, and the truck is working normally. You do have the factory brake controller correct?
Dry Road - Wet road. Happens on both occasions. Yep I have the factory brake controller. It seems like it does not come on initially until I have the trailer hooked up and have to use the brake somewhat hard. Say maybe 2 or 3 leds on the brake controller. From that point on it comes and goes and/or will stay on for 200+ miles. I did stop in Ford one time but since the ABS was not on, trailer disconnected for a few days they said there was nothing they could do and also mentioned the sensor being dirty. I did hook up the computer but show no codes. It's a pain since I am so far away from the dealer. Bad thing for ford is that its over $1000 to tow it there.
Interesting. Btw, that towing to the dealer thing, the dealer has the option of not paying a tow bill if they feel a vehicle can be driven under it's own power, without comprimising safety. Especially if a vehicle will not duplicate when it arrives. (long story with a transmission).
There is a direct relationship between, having to utilize the brakes "somewhat hard" while the trailer is connected, and this ABS light. The system thinks it is in need of ABS. Seems like it is too sensative. This will more than likely not show up as a code. The system feels it is within it's parameter. So perhaps the answer would be to open the parameter. May want to open a new thread asking......
Does anybody know if there is an updated program or "flash" for this scenario?
Did we "hijack" the thread from mongo75?
And if the vss sensor comes out real dirty looking, think about a rear diff fluid change soon because the new vss will start doing the same thing, not too far down the road .
Also clean off the area around the sensor before removing ,don't want any dirt fallin the hole.
