I have a 78 f-250 4x4 with the fuel tank in the cab. It has a 460. A month ago the fuel pump gave out so I replaced it. Since then i can't keep the glass filter full of gas. I never paid attention to it before. Sometimes it fills a quarter of the way up and sometimes it will fill all the way up but drains back down to almost empty. Is the fuel suppose to stay in the filter when it not running? Its always drains out. It had stalled on me twice on the road. I will take off with it at half full but then I must suck it dry. I replaced the fuel lines and checked the tube coming from the top of the tank through the floorboards for cracks. I get alot of air sometimes bubbling in the filter. I guess there could be something wrong with the pickup tube in the tank? Is the filter suppose to be full at all times? It has a 750 holley carb. The tank seems to vent O.K. You can be watching the filter while the truck is running and the filter will fill a little then drain empty then fill a little and so on. All my buddies are at a lost too. Thanks
What side of the pump is the filter on? Suction or discharge? If it is on the suction side it may well be the filter itself that is leaking. If it is on the discharge side, get a gas can and a short length of hose and feed the suction side of the fuel pump from it temporarily and see if that eliminates the problem -- if so then you know that is a suction side leak somewhere. You can then move the can and hose to different points in the system to isolate the problem.
BTW I helped a friend of mine troubleshoot a problem like this in his Mom's Chevy Impala and it was simply out of gas -- the gauge was stuck at 3/4. Boy I didn't let him forget that for a long time !
