1994 351 Bronco with EO4D. Rebuilt trans with upgrades. Still shifts rough and erratic like it did before the rebuild. Just this week trans shop put in new valve body but trans will become unstable and still has hard shifts. Have noticed that when trans is acting up the cruise control goes out. And trans guy is saying the EGR valve is sometimes grounding out on startup. When trans is not acting up everytihing is normal ( shifting and rpms) Any ideas? HELP!
Yeah, it sounds to me like your VSS is on the fritz. It could be wiring to the sensor, or it might just be dirty. It wouldn't be a bad idea to change the diff oil and inspect the tone ring for broken teeth, etc.
As for the trans guy diagnosing your EGR valve, he either has absolutely no idea what he's talking about or you misquoted him. The EGR valve is purely mechanical and is not directly connected to the electrical system.
Is the VSS sensor in the rearend or is it in the tailshaft of the tranny? The mechanic states the sensor he's concerned about is in the tranny tailshaft.
OK, I was a little concerned about this before, but now you officially need a new mechanic. He's incompetent. Take it somewhere else before he REALLY screws things up.
Checked the repair manual and it looks like there is a speed sensor in the transfer case and could this effect the shifting when 4 wheel drive is not in use? Drove the truck to work this morning and it did not act up at all. How does one check the VSS sensor in the differential if it doesn't throw a code? What about the wiring? Thanks. This tranny has been a nightmare.
