Ok, so I'm wondering what truck is better between my '85 ford F-150 (See gallery or sig for more specs) or my friends '86 Chevy silver ado half ton 4x4 with a 6.2 diesel.
My mechanic friend already told me my truck has better towing power but what truck would be faster, like as if we where gonna race?
Or if we where gonna hook 'em up would mine drag his or would his drag mine?
Surprised the Chevy still runs! That 6.2 diesel was a horrible motor, almost as bad as the 5.7 "diesel". No power and not much torque, considering it's an oil burner. The '87 and older Chevys were pretty good other than that. But I'm sure your 400 would make quick work of it unless traction, as in pulling on dirt, is an issue.
My brother had the same truck with the 6.2 it was slow but seemed like it would run forever the clock stopped working at 300,000 and it still keep going. When you look back you can really see how far diesels have come over the last 20 years, I say race and find out it's all in good fun.
We had a 78 E-150 300 I-6, and my friends parents had a 85 1500 suburban with a 6.2 in it. Both could be timed to 60 mph with a sundial but both had decent lowend power. Both also went well over 150K with no major problems that I can remember, not bad considering teenage drivers and all.
Mike-didn't mean to offend! But a stock 6.2 GM diesel had a hard enough time moving an empty truck, let alone any type of load. And saying it can be modded to produce more power than the 6.5 is like saying you have the nicest Pacer at the car show. No GM diesel was competitive until the DMax 6.6 (stock). The 6.9/7.3 and the 5.9 Cummins are far better motors for hauling, even the earlier versions. The DMax moved GM from way behind to the front pretty quick, though.
I meet a guy at the a fuel station last summer with an '87 1/2 ton Chevy with the 6.2L. We got to talking and he said he had 343,000 miles on it and has replaced one injection pump. It seemed like the 6.2L would go 10,000 miles or 1,000,000 miles, more 10,000 milers I think.
