Just wondering if anybody knows what the front axle is made out of on the '64 F100? ie. carbon steel, cast iron, or other... Any help on this would be great. One of our club members just bought a '64 and was wondering, as he wants to stretch his, by adding metal in and welding it up, but he needs to know what kind of metal it is before he get's to welding.
Actually, lower. He swears up and down that in the late 60's and into the 70's they use to stretch the front axle to lower the vehicle. The way he describes it it sounds like it would work but I am in no way a suspension guy.

Me thinks that your friend has been talking to them air head chebby guys and has been fed some bad info.
There is a company that offers to lower your front axle. By looking at their web site it looks like they know what they are doing since there are plenty of examples of what their work looks like from model a's all the way up to 64 f100s. Before and after shots to include what a bad one looks like. FYI I am pretty sure they will be able to tell you have the axles are made out of.
