I've seen other trucks that have supports welded to the axle housing and was wondering if some special type of welding was used for this. I know that when you weld a block it takes a special process for it to come out right, but I don't know if this applies to a D44 front end.
Is it cast iron or can it be welded with a oxy/ace setup? Can you weld to the center section or just the axle tubes or both?
The center section is cast iron and would have to be arc welded with a nickle rod. Even then it would not be very strong. The tubes are steel and I have welded spring perches and the like with an arc welder. I can gas weld as good as anyone but would not even attempt to weld an axle tube with it.
