threaded rod as bolt

Can I use threaded rod as the bolt that passes through my axle and radius arms and retains the lower part of my coil spring on the front of my truck?

No. Threaded rod isn't strong at all.

Why would you want to? Just use the correct part.

I know you are probably trying to save some money but this is not a good spot to do it.

If you don't snap the rod just putting the correct torque on it, this is a good way to have your front end fall apart on you while you're driving.

Just to hold the front end together to move it around the property here. Called ford and they said $69 Cad for the bolt, $30 for the nut! No hardware stores had threads that went that far down on the bolt and parts stores said no way. Tried a lot of parts stores too. I know how weak threaded rod can be in this situation just wondering if anyone else tried it. Anyways went to a heavy equipment shop and bought 2 bolts, took it to my local machine shop and they ran a die down for me.

There is a reason why it's expensive - it shouldn't break. It's a grade eight, heat treated, annealed part. Not your average home depot bolt.

i am a believer in using ford bolts and nuts when i am doing a repair on my vehicle.

so maybe you saved half on your heavy equip. bolt and die work instead of buying the ford part.

i hope it holds up.

I saved a lot more than half. For everyday road travel I would buy the correct bolt. For my driveway, I think I will be ok.

I like this site because I can ask a question and receive great answers. Just wanted to see if anyone tried and how far they got, that's all. Never criticize any question here.

I'd just go to a junkyard and get the right bolts. What happened to the originals? For moving the truck around your property, just about anything would work, but I wouldn't take it out on the highway. You can get strong threaded rod, but it would be very expensive.

The threads were corroded and nuts wouldn't spin off. Threads were only good right under nut. Local junkyards are under big changes here and were not much help. The one u-pick yard we have only had 5 f150s (everything being crushed) and all 5 were in the mud. Good times though, thanks guys.

truckman01: I am curious as how you removed the original bolt? I have some spare complete radius arms with axles attatched that I wanted to strip down to make them easier to store but could not remove the bolt.
