Bracket in Fog Light

The little metal bracket/box around the bulb in the fog light is broken. Is it needed or can I just pull it out? Any ideas what it does?

That metal bracket works as a light diffuser. It helps keep the fog light from becoming a driving light and blinding everyone. Mine rusted and broke (they filled with water after crossing a creek). I ran Silver Stars (9005's) instead of the stock bulb, and they are fine with the diffuser, but way too bright without. I was forced to run the stock bulb (they have the black coating on the tip which prevents direct forward facing light) untill I could replace the whole housing.

If you have stock bulbs, you shouldn't need them. They can be removed out of the housing once you remove the bulb.

Thanks cgl, I went out after dark, not much difference, stock bulbs. Only difference is a little more reflection just in front of the bumper. I like the thought of brighter, Silver Stars all around soon. Mine didn't rust, just broke. Now to get the housing out to remove the diffuser. Oil cooler lines block access to the lower bolt. I have to pull the bumper anyway for a repaint of a "Better Idea from Ford", crappy peeling paint. No big deal though.

any ideas on how to get rid of the water and to seal them so it doesn't keep fogging up?

This is a wise choice. I'm very happy with mine, except the cost.

I just replaced mine last weekend, so it's very fresh in my mind. The bracket has two top bolts and one bottom bolt. 5/16" if I remember correctly. The two top ones are very easy. For the bottom I had to come from underneath. I had a rubber piece that filled the gap between the radiator support and blocker beam. I pulled out one plastic push pin from the rubber, and that gave me better access to the bottom bolt. I couldn't move the 1/4" ratchet very much but it did work. The passenger side was easier. The drivers side has the cooler lines to make it tighter. Plus the push pin on that side also goes through a bracket that holds the power steering cooler lines.

My water evaporated itself out. But you could remove the bulb and get into the light to clean it out. AS for sealing... I was pondering this as well. The clear front is glued to the reflector. So that should be fine. I think the water got in through the vent hole above the bulb. The hole is visible from the front, but is very noticible from the back. I didn't notice it until I got my new ones. My original housings (Stanley) only had a plastic cap on the vent. The new ones (Valeo) have a rubber cap. I'm hoping these will work better. I'm not positive if we can seal that hole or not.
