4cyl upgrade
'86 base ranger, 4banger5speed, I'm getting 26 mpg combined 60/40 highway/city miles. My truck is perfect for a daily commuter unit, but is underpowered, especially getting on the freeway. I wanna put late model 4hole in my Gen 1 ride for more power but I don't want to sacrifice gas mileage. Anybody done this yet? What year motor should get? Any and all info is greatly appreciated.

Hell, if you have an '86, do a turbo 2.3 swap! It'll be easy on your truck since it was pre-DIS, probably easier than a later-model swap, and you'll get 190 hp stock. Head over to turboford.net and go to the message board to find out more about it if you're interested.

aGREED, the only meaningful hp will be gotten through forced induction. Bolt on's won't do much, the head is a weak point as far as flow, but there are some good heads out, along with cams, and so on. But by the time you do internal engine, and head work, would have cost as much as a turbo. You can get turbo 2.3's from alot of mid 80's ford products, like the thunder bird turbo coupe, some couger XR7's, mustang svo, and merkur's.
