I am starting on a '56 Flatbed 4 x 4 which I am building from a '53 Ford F-250 frame, a 70 F250 Flatbed 4 x 4 which has a 351W, 4 speed manual trans and a NP 205 transfer case. This truck will be used for towing, and hauling. The 351 is being fitted with FI courtesy of a 2001 GM computer and Ford Port Injection Manifold with GM injectors. This allows programming of the FI curve with a handheld scanner.
My friend, Mike Bishop and I are also starting on a '53 Ford F-100 Race Truck with Flathead which will be set up to break the existing Stock Truck Flathead Speed Record next year at Bonneville.
I have had a couple of F-100s, a really nice '60 F-100 and the donor '56 F-100 for the cab and body parts of the F-250 project. Its frame is going to the race truck. I have built 4 F-100s for customers. I do a lot of computer/FI repair on late model vehicles. I also have done a lot of Mustang restorations, and some Falcon restorations.
My F250 is being built to be a decent tow vehicle for a 3000 plus pound travel trailer which a F-100 could not be. The choice of a flatbed over a pickup bed is to make hauling building materials easier, and providing room for personal items in water and dust tight storage boxes to make up for the small '56 cab as compared to the extended cab on the 01 Silverado 1500 4 x 4 the the truck is replacing. There will be two side boxes to hold chains, tie down ropes and bungees, jack and tools. The main box, behind the cab will hold personal items, luggage, etc.
This entire project will be documented and put in a gallery for reference.

I have a question for you, though. I looked up kingston, NV on google maps and it put me right in the middle of Austin. What's up with that? Is google maps wrong?

I intend to run through Yosemite Park to Mono Lake, then take 120 across to Benton, Ca. From there I will just run US 6 to Ely, and then 93 into Wendover. I will spend thursday night around Ely and get to the Salt Flats by noon Friday.
Speaking of your route: When I lived in Fresno ages ago, I would take Tioga Pass (through Yosemite) to get to Bishop. It is a lot faster to take 140 up to the Park than 120 (Big Oak Flat road). The trip through the park is pretty uneventful, then Tioga which has been totally sissified. It used to be a car and a half wide with the creek down below 700 feet and it scared the crap out of people. Now it is like a freeway. Oh well......... Your route choice is the best way.....
It is going to be fun to meet you.

You will be able to download a big map: traveler.pdf whilch is interactive and zooms. You can also use their online map and zoom it. Remember to go to section 5 and scroll down to Austin and you will find Kingston just to the southeast of Austin on highway 376. Also, go to website www.austinnevada.com and look around........also some good stuff on www.centralnevadaoutdoors.com

I'm pretty sure you can see Kingston from the hot springs at night. There are quite a few lights backed up against the Big Smoky Valley side of the Toiyabe range.I have one of the backroads atlas maps for Nevada and it's great for finding your way on the more interesting and scenic roads of rural Nevada.

It was fun, found a couple of nice towns I did not know even existed. Been making that trip for more than 30 years and yet there was new country I had not seen.
Later I needed to go to the east bay area so I just headed that direction from Madera taking different county roads - there is a lot of farms and farming communities between Madera and Pleasanton. Made for an interesting trip with lots of junk to look at.
I will cross Nevada the same way, except I expect it will be more piles of mining junk than farming junk to look at. Nevada has always been this big empty space you crossed by putting your mind in neutral and your foot down. This time I am avoiding the interstates and will spend more time stopped than driving.
I will download this map to the laptop and bring it with me.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I wanted to see if you had ever heard of the Gary Scelzi thing. It is that a guy was going to the Madera race track, and the other guy asked him if he knew of the Gary Scelzi factor? He said no, I haven't. The other guy said well everybody going to the track will have a lowered Chevy truck and a Scelzi mustache............. The joke goes on that he was right. Is this true?
