External trans filter questions

Go get a bottle of SP from the dealer. I used about a third of a quart refilling the canister when I swapped my external filter.

Dealer also said to use Dextron V ? I don't think I will be letting them touch my truck. The computer apparently only listed the filter that was inside the pan.

Is there a part number on the external filter that screws on? I assume it is a cannister type like the fuel and oil?

Also would guess you get it from the IH dealer as well?

You'll probably lose about 1/2 cup. I change mine every time I change my air filter. That's every 20K but what the heck, it can't hurt.

Motorcraft FT-145, it looks like a roll of paper from a 10-key adding machine and feels like a hard roll of toilet paper. I just changed that filter on my truck this morning. The canister unscrewed easily with a 22MM socket and only a few tablespoons of Mercon SP fluid dripped out. It was the easiest filter change I have ever done on any vehicle.

Thanks. Talked w/ IH and they don't offer these filters. Only Motocraft and Wix (Pt #57702) have them. Apprciate the info!

Found Mercon SP on E-bay $35 a case with $17 for shipping...Thats 4.33 a qt..Don't know what Ford wants ..But I won't put anything in mine that's not FOMOCO product..Good Luck
