I just got my first vehicle, it is a '66 F-100. It came with a 240 6-cyl. I have a '80 (I think)302 with electronic ignition. How do I hook-up the electronic ignition and how difficult is this engine swap (eg. motor mounts etc.). I am 16 yrs old and willing to learn as much as I can.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Nov-02 AT 10:47 PM (EST)]It's not hard to convert over to a duraspark. I converted my 63 over to an 84 351W with the 84 electronic ignition and from a generator to an alternator.
I will have to dig up my wiring diagram. E-mail me and I will send it to you .

Anthony, Firstly, Welcome to the hobby! Learning about these old Fords is absolutely the most fun. I have been doing it for over 50 years now and learn new stuff everyday. With that in mind, why not work on the 6 cylinder? Get the truck running good with all the safety features working. The 6 is a very good engine and will provide many opportunities for learning. This engine is also very forgiving if you make a mistake. When your skills are greater, your tool box full, you know the local junk yard dog by his first name, have located a machine shop and lastly put away a few grand for unexpected situations, that is the time to swap out the 6 for an 8. About that, it is a fairly easy swap since Ford did it and the parts you will need are in the junk yard. Good luck and enjoy the hobby. Please post back once in a while we like to know how these projects turn out.

You can convert to the Ford Duraspark ignition. It is a great system and is available in parts stores and junkyards. There is a tech article on this site but it doesn't open right now. Email me and I can send you the wiring instructions.
I've seen lots of posts about conversions using the Pertronix Ignitor System and lots about going with the Ford Duraspark II system. Anyone have any recommendations? I'm running an early 70s 302 w/ C4 in my 61 SB Stepside.
Neither the Petronix of the Duraspark is hard to swap in. The Petronix is easier, it just drops into your stock distributor with only two wires to connect. The Duraspark is a little more work...you need the distributor and control module from the type engine you are installing and there are a few more wires to connect.
Both are good systems that operate very reliably. The difference? $90 or so for the Petronix vs. probably half that for junkyard Duraspark system. I'm a big fan of the Duraspark ignition but will use Petronix on my truck simply because it will still look stock and is less hassle.
