Is it a ping type sound or maybe a lifter tapping. I would think a more of a pinging sound due to lack of gas. My truck pinged when i had the fuel issue also.
have you ever had the dist. and pickup coil which is at the bottom of the dist checked and/or replaced? the 302's are known for them going bad and can cause this kind of problem. even intermitently and especially under a load like you are decribing.
by the way just a little FYI there a couple differnt dists. for the 302 make sure you get the correct one or it wount go in all the way and spell disaster for ya.
its done that already "( hardly run at all) and then i took it in and they replaced some stuff like the fuel pressure regulator and spark plugs and wires and it was 100 percent better for 2 days.
