48-50 Grille Question
Vern
I can check tonight. I have a grille minus the stainless bars hanging on my wall at home. It seems to me that there are at least 4 holes per bar but don't quote me on that.
When did they start using the stainless trim on the grilles? Was it just for 1950 or was it an option starting in 48?

Thanks. That's a good question. My 48 nor my 49 stocker didn't have the holes in the grille and a 48-50 grille I picked up in a swap meet didn't have the holes either so I don't know. Perhaps is was a dealer option???

I just looked through all of my pics hoping I had a pic showing the holes. I don't. I'll check tonight and let you know if somebody else doesn't know the answer.
I always thought that the 48 and 49 grilles were just painted and that the 50's had the stainless but I'm not certain on that.

I think they were added to spruce up the old gals.
I banged out the dents in my paitned one and gave it a quick coat of "cowboy chrome" from a rattle can. Someday when I tear it all back a part to purdy it up I might add the stainless bars

I drilled the holes (4 per) just about in line with the letters F O R D on the upper valance. Worked out well, but was one of those sequence items. Sure is close quarters in there. I think I put mine on before assembling the grille??

I looked at my spare grille last night. It has 6 holes per bar; 4 round holes across the main part of each bar and a slotted hole at each side right at the center of the radius as it turns back.
4tl8ford,
Thanks, I've always wondered about it. I figured people had just added on the "Bright Grille"

I never knew there were trucks made without them until about 15 years ago. Another item that was on the CDN Fords both cars and trucks was a V.I.N. plate fasteded to the cowl under the hood at center top.
From what I have been told the U.S. built Fords never had that until 51.
I tried to get one made for my 47 coupe from the guy who remakes them with proper documentation to back up the request. He advised me that I never misplaced mine because there never was one to start with.
Anyway thats my 2 cents worth.
My 49 has a VIN plate on the cowl, its not in the center though. Its on the passenger side near the top. According to the numbers on my truck it was assembled at the Dallas, TX plant.
I sure like all the brightwork that the CDN trucks had. They were classy

[/IMG] Bobbytnm I just looked up a pic of my 50 under hood shot and it clearly shows the V.I.N. plate that I described on this topic. I will try and post it if possible, if I can remember how its done.
Also in my previous post on this, my information came from the guy that redoes the V.I.N. tags. Again let me point out that he will not do any without the proper documentation, for that vehicle.
