Im thinking about getting a new truck. I dont know what to get. Im kinda leaning towards a 2006 dodge 3500 with the 5.9 cummins, or should i wait and get the new 6.4, or get a 6.0 now? Just wonder what any of you would do.
I'd stick with your Cummins choice. Maybe you could register on one of the Dodge sites and ask the same question in reverse: "I'm leaning towards the far superior in all aspects Ford F350 with the 6.0 psd, or should I go cummins?"
I just got my new 2007 F350, and I test drove both the Ford and Dodge before buying. I love the styling on both trucks with only a slight edge to Ford (all personal opinion anyway). Personally I think the cummins is hands down the best engine of the 3. I was in the market for a manual transmission and again the NV in the dodge felt way better than the ZF in the Ford. Here is the rub that steered me towards the Ford. The Cummins turns off the fuel around 3000rpm while the powerstroke pulls significantly longer. With the manual tranny you are shifting so soon and you loose your boost on the shift, it just felt that the powerstroke had so much better driveability with the manual tranny. My opinion is this is why in any pulloff between these 3 trucks that the Dodge finishes last despite better torque numbers and the same HP rating than the powerstroke. Also personally I think the Ford had better option packages like the trailer brake controller, and most people will tell you that if you take the engines out of the equation that the Ford is a much better truck. I also personally believe the last point. All said, if the Dodge dealer would of played ball on the price like the Ford Dealer did, I could be driving one of them now, either way both are quality vehicles and I think you will be happy with either one. Just my opinion.
My Opinion about a Dodge:Cummins is a GREAT motor in a piece of junk truck. Ford has a much better Automatic transmission and you wont be going thru front tires and having your teeth rattled out because a dodge front end just cannot hold up. I love my 97 250 PSD and My 2006 Psd is great too, your best bet is to go with the Ford.
The 5.9 is a piece. Cummins makes a great Inline 6 cylinder for the big boy trucks - but for the 3/4 or 1-ton market, leave it to PowerStroke to out pull, out run, and out LAST Cummins AND Duramax. My dad still pulls his 11,000 lb bob cat around with his '90 F-250 and it has over 200,000 miles on it! If that's not enough for you - I unhooked my 5th wheel (got 11.5mpg that trip!) a couple of weeks ago and was taking my truck home across town, met a '99 Mustang Cobra who thought there was no way an '05 6.0L PowerStroke could beat him to the next light. I won that bet. And all I have is 4" exhaust, AirRaid intake, and BullyDog tuner upgrades - i'd be scared to see what it'll do with propane...
I owned a Duramax and I traded it after 6 months. My brother owns a Cummins and he hates himself for buying it after driving mine.
We have both of those trucks and both are great IMO the F350 has a bit more power but like I said both have their high points, Id say go test both and see which you like, but if your gunna wait for the 6.4 you mise well wait for the new cummins motor in the 07 dodges its gunna be a 6.7 liter version
