Bumper Chrome
Bumper Chrome
So today I was walking through automotive at Walmart, and I saw that Plasti-kote made "Bumper Chrome." It is a spray on "chrome." I was just wondering if anyone has tried this, if it looks alright. Chrome is peeling on my bumpers, and I was wondering if this would be a decent solution for that. If it looks horrible, I will just buy new bumpers when I get a little richer. Thanks guys.

I haven't used that particular brand but at the plating shop we used a chrome paint to touch up deep crevices where chrome solution doesn't flow and it is yellow from the nickel plate; in that application it looks better than the yellow but not as good as true chrome. The better the surface is prepped, the better it will look - through sanding to feather out peeling and roughness and priming but in the end it will be nowhere as brilliant as chrome.
Way back when ... I picked up a really cheap set of used chrome reverse wheels that had a lot of pits and peeling. I've also used this same trick on bumper flakes, dings, etc.
Testors model paint makes a silver that if left unshaken seperates out to a shiny chrome enamal touch up finish. On the rims I cleaned them up and using a very small brush carefully dipped some of the shiny stuff off the top of the bottle (you'll see what I mean if you carefully open a bottle that has sat and allowed to seperate) and dabbed it into the pits and rust spots. After it had had a chance to set up any paint that got on the good chrome would wipe off leaving a good silver in place of the rust. By the time I got done touching up and clearcoating them they looked great. Used those same rims on two different cars and they still looked good.

I used Krylon chrome in a can spray bomb. Looks like a satin finish aluminum....it shines pretty good in the sun but it looks nothing like chrome...I guess you could get it to shine better with some more work, like multiple layers, clear coats and wetsand and polishing, but it still wont look chrome.
