i have an oil leak on the drivers side of my 99 350 7.3. i have power washed the erea today to find the leak. if you look in by the drivers side tire and into the motor. i see a tube about 2 inches around and is bolted to the front end of the motor and go's to what looks like a cap at the back of the motor. what is this? it looks like the oil is leeking from the elbow that bolts to the front of the motor. is this posable or could my oil leek be higher up and dripping on this tube?..thanks in advance...
ron
that, my friend, is the oil cooler. it is a tube and fin design, oil goes through the tubes and coolant passes over the fins. it is possible that the oil is leaking out of the cooler elbow, however i have never heard of such a thing. is it a fast leak or just a slow drip? i think it may be coming from somewhere above.
it is a slow drip. i just power washed it today so it may still be wet oil leaking. i never see spots on the ground but it seems to leak only when running cause it smears around the fender well and around the frame right there. i been watching oil level closly. i use about 2 quarts about every 2500 miles. is that normale? i fugure maybe if it stays dry tomarow i might have a better chance of finding it.
if its not the oil cooler, the only other thing i can think of on that side is the ccv doghouse gasket. kinda unlikely that 2 qts could get out of it that quick since it would only be splashed up by the valvetrain. when i built my motor i didnt get it sealed perfectly and it leaked a little bit, but not much till i fixed it. or maybe as easy as a valve cover gasket. if the cooler was leaking you would probably see coolant leaking too. good luck
thanks chevskeezy..not sapost to rain today so im going to look further into it tonite after work. its not a bad leek i just dont like a durty moter and like to fix it. it seems to be clean above the cooler. but hard to tell. between the wind and the fan one spot of oil makes a big mess. is 2 quarts every 2500 miles too much?? right now i have gone about 1800 on oil change and im down a quart..thanks again for the help
strokin is probably right. there are o-rings in there that get hard and crack then leak. no to bad to get out if you take 2 motor mount bolts out on the driverside and jack the motor up about 1 inch. some have said that you don't need to be but for me it was easier to jack the motor up then try to snake that thing out. you will also need the gaskets for each end that attach to the block.
If you are going to replace those O-rings, here's a little advice. Don't go to the Stealership and buy those, like I did and pay $100. Go here and they are alot , alot cheaper. Didn't find those till I already purchased some.http://catalog.powerstrokeshop.com/p...catalogid=4411
thanks for the reply tjbeggs. just got home from work and it is dry out today so i looked in there..im sure it is the cooler.where the tube go's into the elbow...everything above that seems to be dry and clean..
thank you 670johndeere sure do appreciate them sites. will come in handy for sure..thanks alot.
it seems to be only dripping. should i be concerned and fix this pronto..im useing about 2 quarts every 2500 to 3000 miles... but im not sure how much presure is in that cooler..i dont want to blow a rubber O ring and loose all my oil..
is there anything els i should do while i have this thing out?
maybe i should look into a new cooler? its an early 99 f350.it has 155k on it..thanks alot guy's ...this site rocks
i would defanitely spring for a new cooler. how do you know that the coolant and oil aren't mixing, or going to mix eventually? does your coolant degas bottle have a white or gray film or a milky look to it?
no it isnt. i did think of that last night after talking to you though and looked at both oil and coolent to see if there was a loss or gain or change of color...seems to be good for now..found one cooler for 189 bucks..its 38 for o ring kit.. i think i will go that rout..with only 155k it still has a long ways to go so i better do it right.. is there an upgaded cooler?? or am i only going to find a stock one??thanks again strokin...
I don't know that you would need a whole new oil cooler if you live somewhere like me where they don't salt the roads. I can understand Kris, where you would want to in your neck of the woods. Holes in everything after 5 years. But out here in the wild wild west, that is not a concern. We have a LOT of 20 year old cars running around here that have no rust at all. The oil cooler would not be corroded at all, just have hard, brittle gaskets. Just clean it all up thoroughly and put it all back together.
oh, you mean the mating surface between the cooler and the block or the cooler and the elbow is leaking? i thought that the actual cast elbow was leaking, and i couldnt figure out how a seal kit would stop a piece of metal with a hole in it from leaking..?
strokin no its leaking where the tube go's into the elbow. i guess there is 2 O-rings in each side. where it bolts to the motor is fine from what i can see.
