hey, i was driving today and my trans felt a little slow when it was shifting and slipped a little, then the O/D light started flashing? i let it cool down and it doesnt do any of this when its cold it seems and O/D is turning on and off? whats this mean, new trans?
Bob's right on, as always. Autozone or the like will typically scan codes for free, you just gotta know to ask. Typically walking in and saying "I need codes scanned on a __ year model Ranger" will suffice. Don't let them try and sell you something though, bring back the numerical codes here.
there closed now i'll go in the morning and see what happens, i hope nothing is seriously wrong, it was slipping pretty bad though so i dunno, i just know when i turned my car off, the O/D light wasnt flashing anymore and i drove it and it was fine when it was cold off a little but not completely cold and then it started again but this time no flashing light, then i tried switching O/D on and off and it was working so i dunno whats goin on
well the cars driving pretty good actually today, i got filter kit, fluid and some lucas trans stuff and a bigger trans cooler while i was at it im about to put it all on, the car didnt set off any codes except a lean air one and thats cause i have a vaccum leak somewhere it was code p0171, so thank god for that

A word of caution! If your tranny calls for Mercon V, ONLY use Mercon V, nothing else!!! DO NOT use any multi-purpose Mercon/Mercon V ATFs, and
DO NOT put that Lucas additive in.....You may want to consider flushing your tranny using the cooler lines with a couple gallons before dropping the pan to change the filter.......
WHen you drop the pan to change the filter, be very careful to keep everything extremely clean. Make sure the cleaning cloths you use are "lint free".
