paint gun choices

I have a 2 hp compressor with a 7.5scfm at 40psi. None of the hvlp guns I have seen will operate at the cfm rating except mini guns. Is it a consideration to paint an entire vehicle with a mini gun? Other wise I have seen some of the real cheapies of the conventional type that will run around 6cfm. What are my best options here? I am not an experienced painter and don't expect a first rate job but want to do the best I can.

You can usuaally get a reasonable work truck type job by just
spraying untill you run out of air and letting the compressor
catch up. Not the best solution but it can be done.

To preview what you got HVLP,compressor, hose etc., put some
reducer, water or anything and spray some some surface and
see how much "wait" time you have.

There is a lot of archive material on compressor size v. HVLP guns.

If this is going to be a one-time deal you might consider renting the equipment you need. If you plan on painting vehicles very often you will eventually need to move up to a larger compressor. It has been several years ago, but "back in the day" I rented the equipment I needed for about 10 bucks a day. I'm sure it will be a little pricier these days.

BTW mini-guns are great for touchup but just do not pack
enough paint for a truck repaint...you have to continually
refill the gun. However guys have painted with everything
from rattle can...brush...roller and mini-gun.

Renting won't work in my situation as I'm going to be doing it in pieces. I have a donor cab that I'll be doing first then other parts as I get them ready. Do any of the companies make larger cups to fit the mini guns?
