Hi All, I'm here in Wv and I have whats is called "free gas" which means that I don't pay for the natural gas going to my house. That said I'm verrrry interested in a cng injection system has anyone seen one?
CNG is "compressed natural gas". He can buy a compressor and compress his own. I think they're a couple of thousand, and I think I recall someone talking about how his company ran a bunch of V10's on CNG and they did very well..... Try a search on it, I know I've seen it.....
Yet again I am going to state I have no expertise on this but, compressing a fuel might have some severe safety issues (compression = heat = possible ignition). I suspect there are some serious regulations associated with this and its probably not possible in a residential area.
At my day job (NYSDOT), they run a bunch of CNG vehicles. They a have a bunch of filling stations (compressors, tanks, and pumps I presume) to keep 'em running. These stations do not look cheap! They will definately catch the attention of your neighbors. Further, the tanks in these vehicles are BIG, and everyone complains they do not have enough range. Keep in mind these are totally CNG vehicles, not just injected, if there's a difference.
I recall looking into this a few years back, and you can obtain industrial CNG compressors intended for field work that are built on about a 10' trailer. They are self powering because they burn the gas that they are compressing to obtain power. I just did a google search on "cng compressor" and "trailer" and got 500 hits.
It strikes me that it would be worth considering if the natural gas is free, because you could build a little shed and park the trailer in it with proper ventilation and pump away.
Say the whole arrangement (compressor, shack, and cng injector system) were to cost $5,000. At $3 a gallon this would be 1,666 gallons, or 16K miles at 10 mpg, after which he could fuel the truck for almost nothing.
There was a poster here from Norway who I think ran his truck on CNG because it was quite a bit cheaper there than gasoline, which isnt' true in the U.S., but if the gas is free that changes the equation! Do a search here on Norway, and maybe V10. Seems like his was a shared system, with some gasoline comsumed until the engine warmed up, then cng. In fact, I think the system was made in Canada, though his was an older 2-valver.
Maby I should elaborate, I have a 99 Ford F250 Diesel SD 4x4, I'm thinking of buying a Cng or LGN tank, a regulator"the same as a oxy acc.torch" and a propane controller ie. it opens when turbo pressere increases proportionately .Being in the HVAC industry I know that the btu s of ng is less than lp ,so I may have to increase pressure or open/bore out the injector I'll go to alt. fuels next
Check out the first link in this post, the PHILL compressor is what you'll need to fill your CNG tank. I should think that LNG is still inaccessible for home use/compression at this time, unless you're extraordinarily wealthy... you may be able to use a LNG tank, but there wouldn't be any reason to.
PHILL doesnt sell to WV,and I think I would like to have a truck that can run on cng before I put the $5K into a filling station, there is a Shevron cng filling station about 40 miles from home so I'd like to fill there first, but I still havnt seen a system on the market that I'm looking for, I'd hate to rig up a lp system with a cng tank, but that looks like the only option, what do you guys think?
