390 doesnt get spark

I put a 390 in a 1979 pickup that had a 1983 or 84 inline six. the problem is that there is no spark to the coil. i used the coil from the in line six. There was a plug that goes into the coil but then there is a plug that was going to the distributer three wires. now i think this has to do with the 1970 390 not running. any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks Nick.

The 6 probably had electronic igniton (the reason for 3 wire to the dist.) If the 390 has points in the dist. there is only one wire from the dist. to the coil.

The easiest fix would be an electronic distributor for the 390, then it is just plug and play. Otherwise you will need to change several components and do some wiring to install the point ignition.

How so? The dist., if it is points unit, already has the wire that goes to the negative on the coil and the power from the igintion switch is already there. At most you would need a ballast resistor to go between that ingition wire and the positive side of the coil. But there could already be a resistor in the wire. Would need to check a wiring diagram to find out.

I kinda of forgot that the Ground coming froming the distributer had to go to the coil. i did not even mess with the plug that went to the elctronic distributer. Got it running and is pretty good for $300 . i said the engine was 390 because i was told that by the guy who sold it to me. it came from a 1970 F-250. the quesion i have now is that there is 352 casted into the block. Does that mean i have a 352 i m just curious so when i order parts.

The 352 just tells you that the block is an FE block. Could be a 352, 360, 390, 406, 428 or a 427. Not likely the 3 latter ones, though. You have to check the stroke and if it is 3.78" then it is probably a 390 (could be a 427 but I doubt it). Almost all the parts on top of a 352 ar pretty much the same as the 390s. Heads, intakes, alt., P/S pumps, dist., etc. all interchange.
