My buddy has an early 99 F-350 4x4 cc with about 175,000 miles on the stock transmission. He is currently running 315 size tires on it, and has 3.73 gears in it. He has recently been having problems with his transmission. It seems that it slips a bit going into second gear. The RPMs seem to actually raise a little bit before it goes into gear. It hesitates and shifts hard when it goes into second.
He has a Jody Tipton chip, 40hp 80 hp and 120 hp, it only seems to do this when he has the chip turned up. It doesn't seem to do the slip thing in stock mode. He was thinking of getting a shift kit. Jody recommended the transgo shift kit.
Does anyone know if this would help his transmission. If so what kind is recommended and where do you get it from. Also, how hard is to install b/c the transgo kit picture shows lots of parts? Also, he is going back to 285 size tires next week, is that going to show a dramatic increase on the transmission shifts.
I've only installed one transgo kit and that was in a 5.0 mustang. I will say that it was very straightforward and even came with a video. It was a good kit, worked and still is working very well. If that is what Jody said to get, that is what I would go with.
Get a valve body from BTS. It has a modified transgo kit installed. The VBs are customized to work with Jody's chips, he highly recommends them if you run his chip. I have one and it was a dramatic improvement over stock or the Sonnax.

Aside from the transgo kit, what does the BTS VB have in it that you could not accomplish with a transgo kit in your own VB? What if his DP tune is for a stock tranny? Finally, he did say that the transgo is what Jody recommended.
Not trying to agitate you, but I've installed a TG and cannot think of what the BTS VB will have over just the TG kit put in by yours truly. Anybody?

From what I saw, BTS drills a few extra holes in the transgo plate. Doesn't sound like much, but it supposedly fine tunes it. Good point, if the chip was programmed for stock trans, he would want to have it reprogrammed. I'm sure Jody would be reasonable about that.
Just for the record, I did drill some holes in the plate that I installed. As I recall, the kit came with several drill bits that had instructions as for shift firmness and bits to use. Of course this was for a 5.0 but sounds awful similar.
Aside from that, new springs and a few ball bearings, plunger etc.
All... i just bought an 01 F250 7.3 diesel. I was reading articles in diesel power magazine about getting the motor to get as much bang for the buck as far as fuel usage goes and letting air get thru the system as best as possible. Does anyone out there have any tips for tuning the motor? I want it to be as efficiant as possible and be good for the motor and exhaust pipe temps. Any thoughts? Thanks, Jeff
Jeff, check the common mods thread and read through this site. Oh, put aside a lot of time to do it because there's volumes of free info here. Then when you have a ?, just start a new thread. Welcome.
On that note, what is the most kick a$$ auto tranny available??? I put a new stock one in Jan 2005 and although it is still treating me very well, I am thinking I want something that will totally handle the propane, water, chip and 10K mod, not to mention the 40" tires I have. Thoughts?
Do yall think the tire size has any play on this matter? Also, it only seems to do this in second, seems to hesitate then slam or shift very hard? Any more thoughts or opinions?
