Easy question for you guys!

I've been reading some posts and have determined my egr might be stuck. I've never had to deal with one before and am not sure where it is and how to clean it?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have an 88 f150 4x4 w/ 300-6.

Looking at a shop drawing it is at the back of the engine behind the throttle body on the right side looking into the engine bay.

You can clean it with any spray carb cleaner. Just pull the valve off and work it up and down while spraying cleaner on it. Easy.

Is your truck running bad? What pointed you to the EGR? When you remove the EGR, you don't need to remove the EVP sensor mounted on top.

My truck sometimes idles high and low, up and down, it doesn't do it all the time and this seems to be a common question here and alot of people point to EGR. Next week I'm replacing valve cover and fuel pressure reg. and I thought now would be a good time to look into EGR.
Thanks guys!!

It can't hurt to check and clean the egr. If you have a vacum pump check it first to see if it will move up and down and hold a vacuum. Before you start replacing parts check for any codes to help narrow down the problem .Test the parts to make sure they are defective. This idle thing can get frustrating to find the source of the problem, especilly when it doesnt do it all the time.

Thankguys
Mississauga, you have helped me a tremendous amount with this thread and others I have posted, you are very helpful and are awesome about recommending to not just throw parts at it. Again thanks!

Also might want to check the IAC valve. If it's sticking open a little bit, it will cause it to have a higher-than-normal idle. Both the EGR and IAC can be cleaned and checked to make sure they are working properly.

I quess I would like to eliminate any other possibilites. I'm not sure where my IAC valve is?? I assume this could be cleaned the same way the EGR is cleaned?

The IAC is on the throttle body, quite close to the EGR. One of its duties is to regulate the idle speed. As handyman says build up around these areas can cause some eratic idle. The IAC has an electrical connector also. You can also clean it with throttle body spray which does the same thing as carb cleaner. Hold the throttle open and clean around the throttle body butterfly valves with a tooth brush so they seat properly. These are regular maintainance things which can be done for a small cost and some of your time. Results can be good if these areas are caked up with carbon.

I went down to NAPA today, bought FPR and valve cover gasket, I appreciate all your help. I admit that I am new to these EFI engines. I got tired of bringing my vehicles to the shop and paying for things that didn't help. I'll let you guys know how things turn out!!!

You bought a FPR? I don't think you needed a fuel pressure regulator.....

Actually, mine leaks and I didn't mean to combine threads and cause confusion, but I'm changing FPR, valve cover gasket and was wanting to check into my idle problem at the same time. Sorry for the mix up.
Thanks Steve

Talking Throttle Position Sensor

I had a similar problem and pulled codes to find mine was the Throttle Position Sensor. Auto Zone has a good web site to help find part locations on vehicles and tips on how to replace them.
