My 7.3 won't start unless it is plugged into the block heater, when I turn the ignition on I here the glow plug relay click and my amp guage goes back and forth until the wts light goes out.It used to do this and would start, now i have to have it plugged in. I know it is a glow plug problem could it be the relay box. It is a 94 f-350 7.3 idi a banks turbo . Any help would be great. Thanks Craig
Sounds like the relay might be going out. If it was clicking as soon as you turned on the key then there is the problem. It should stay on for at least 3-5 seconds if a warm day then start clicking.
I guess I should have said that it would only start when it clicked , I would watch the volt meter and if it didn't click I would cycle the ignition until I got it to go.The wait to start light would always function but unless the clicking and volt meter thing happened it would not start. When it would not pop it would belch out white smoke with some really cool smoke rings so I am getting fuel.I guess I should just get out the volt meter and go through the troubleshooting game, the only problem is I bought the only manual in town for the truck and it sucks. Thanks for the help.
What your describing is what I went thru a couple of years ago. Look at the relay in back of the air cleaner. look for the ground wire which is located under a bolt which holds down the relay to the block. clean the contact area under the bolt. I ran another ground wire from the battery (-) to here to be sure I had a great ground. Haven't had any problems since.
