what could happen ?

This up-coming Winter I am considering re-doing my Exhaust on my 78 f150 ( its in my gallerie's) . I am thinking of a complete replacement from the manifolds down . I have a 351M there is no catalytic's on my truck because its a 78 and I have Dual Exhaust, I am haveing a friendly noise making competition with a neighbor who has an older model Harley Davidson ( which is very LOUD) by the way . I went to a muffler shop and was told I could run my truck with no mufflers ( straight piped) because its a 78 and I would be very loud ,I want to do this till the fall but I am having some reservations about it ,,,,, Would the truck sound cool ? or like crap? , would my engine be ok if I did this ? any input from you all would be greatly Appreciated

Straight pipes ?

First of all - it may be illegal to NOT have muffler(s) at all. I would go to headers and glaspaks. AND to a larger pipe than OEM, the engine will breath better and the sound will be deeper, especially if you use a 2' by 4" tip(s). OR you could go to 3" pipe off the collectors straight back. I would use a crossover or an X-pipe just behind the headers. Straight pipes WILL sound like an AA gun when you back off it (( HD machine gun )).

I know everyone loves their duals but I think a single 3" system, long tube headers, no cats or mufflers until the end and then cap it off with a supertrapp.

You can then tune it to be louder or quieter by adding or removing the discs on it.

Making it a single 3" instead of a dual 2.5" will give it more depth.

Here in the states a 78 F150 would have had cats.

Do you really want it to be that loud all the time? I can really undesrstand your war with the guy down the street. It is what sets us apart from the soccer moms and minivan people. (sorry Aerostar guys)
How about a functional exhaust, so the police leave you alone, and install an exhaust cut-out, for those times when "loud pipes saves lives" guy pulls up? Yeah I know, they leak, and are kind of a pain, but it does serve your purpose.

I had a friend back in high school that used to run his '79 f150 w/351 and straight pipes. We never needed to ask where he was we would just stick our head out the window. Yeah it might be illegal, but if a guy wanted to drown out a hog that would be the way to do it. FWIW Josh

I just bought another Ford today.

1981 F150, 2WD, 302, auto.

It's stock back to the cat and then it dumps into a small glasspack and then splits out into two tailpipes, probably 2" diameter. Sounds like dog poo.

What is with so many guys using such skinny pipes on their trucks?

BTW I went and looked at some Cherry bomb glasspack exhaust mufflers yesterday I am thinking they might do the trick

Talking Exhaust ??

My 1st car was a '52 Chevy Delux 4-door. It had been changed to a 235 I-6 and had a p/u 4-speed trany and rear. The exhaust was split into two 3" pipes straight back. It was deep and mellow UNTIL I backed down hard, then it sounded worse than an 18 wheeler hard on the jake. It sounded like it had a big block - cruising or under power.

You do want to open up the exhaust a bit to improve flow, but not everybody needs dual 3" pipes. You gotta find a happy middle ground.

That car, at that time was "in tune" for the 3" pipes. They were installed by one of the best mechanics in the area. For normal driving it sounded deep but quiet and noticeable. Pretty good for a small I-6.

I wouldn't go for an open exaust and would stick with a single 3" or a dual 2". JMudder mentioned back pressure and this is important on a street machine since it keeps the exhaust valve cylinder pressure up and keeps the exhaust valves from cooling down to fast and warping along with other problems in head flow and gas milelage. Stick with a good sounding exhaust that is easy on your engine and doesn't grap the attention of your local pd.
