fuel problems,long post

Truck is in sig. was running fine,couple days ago it wouldn't start,cranking fine ,no fuel. i changed the fuel filter(was due anyway)no change. Checked for fuel flow thru lift pump at shrader valve,it was good. checked for fuel at injector,no good.Figured that the injector pump went out. tested the shut off solenoid,everything working properly. I removed the injection pump and swapped it with a spare i have(came off running 86 6.9). tried to restart and nothing. I do now have fuel to the injectors. I checked to make sure the glow plugs were getting current,all fine there(the glow plugs are motorcraft less than 6 months old). if i give it just a little bit(and i mean little bit) of ether it will fire and stay running. when driven it will run ok but i am not getting the black smoke out the exhaust when under power. i retested the lift pump and get 5p.s.i. when cranking??Any ideas why it won't start . it seems to be a not enough fuel problem,not sure what i am missing. thanks.

Check the glo plugs,take a test light,clamp to pos on batt,remove the wire from the gp,touch the probe to where you removed the wire from on the gp,if it lights the gp is ok,if not its no good,test all of them.Lack of smoke under power can be the setting on the pump,maybe your other pump had the fuel screw turned up or it could be a high altitude pump.
