Finally getting ready to get the new headers on my 93 f-250 460 that has been waiting since last fall. When I removed the EGR tube from the exhaust manifold it broke off at the nipple that comes from the manifold. I must have tweaked the tube that runs up to the throttle body as well. In trying to remove the cone shaped nut the tube has broken twice from the vibrations from the impact socket. I have tried all at my disposal to get that nut off and had no success. Now facing a frozen nut and a twice broken tube, I am thinking of alternatives. Do I get a whole new tube, get rid of the EGR or what? I do live in an area that I have to pass emissions, and I don't want the engine light on all the time. Any suggestions?
I would get a new tube. They rust out over time and become brittle, so as you found out they keep breaking.
I have not done this repair on my current truck so can give general advice as follows.
On most engines it is not hard to replace the tube. But becareful that if you have any steel gaskets to keep them. Some tube kits and EGRs do not come with the steel gasket. Also watch you don't drop it, they are a beach to find since they are so thin they can hide pretty good.
