Hi guys, I am seriously considering getting a new (to me) 2001 Ford Escape XLS V6 4dr 2wd with 88,000 miles on it. I need to know what I would need to do to make this Escape up to date on maintainance before I go tearing across country in it. I am mechanically inclined and service all my other vehicles. I am thinking about changing:
Spark plugs
Oil + Filter
Air filter
Transmission oil (filter is internal and cannot be changed-correct)
Can I use synthetic tranny oil.
Are there any things that I need to check out on the vehicle that would be noticable (warning signs) for me NOT to buy this one.
All your expertize/help/input is genuinely welcome
The tranny filter cannot be changed. Also, your owner's manual states in bold print that only plain Mercon can be used. Now Ford has announced it will be eliminating the plain Mercon standard next spring but there's lots of discussion on that since they've always said Mercon V is not compatible.
Warning signs? Drive it between 40-50mph and make sure the torque converter doesn't shudder. If it does - run!
Before changing the plugs, get some anti-seize lube for the plugs and a set of intake gaskets since you must pull the intake manifold for the back three spark plugs.
