ok, first post to this site...but i am gonna give err hell.
I am obligating myself to this huge project...a night mare all by itself.
From what i am told a 50 f1 cab, 52 f1 front end, on a unknown year f2 frame.
i am going to be putting a c4 trans in it with the flat-o kit. i ahve a newer ford 9" i am putting in it.
next big problem...want the bolt patterns on front to back to match...or at least 5 lugs...doesnt matter about being same. just 5 lugs.
the truck is a flathead 8 truck with 8 lug suspension.
SO the question is.................
What can i do to change the front w/o spending the rest of the bank...i already robbed 2 banks for the parts for what i have listed(trans and rear end)
Any help would be greatly appreciated..
thanks a bunch
You can use a later rear out of a late 60's-early 70's F-100, it's supposed to be a easy swap. The front axle is the same as a F-1, you have to swap the F-2 brakes and backing plates and drums from a F-1. THat will give you a 5 bolt pattern. The later F-100's used a 9 inch rear. Some had a Dana 44, but not alot. You can also use a 9 inch rear end from a 60's-70's Car and re-weld the spring perches to match your spring width. It probably wouldn't hurt to remove a few leaves out the springs to soften the ride.
i already have the rear end, thanks though. my last main concern is the front bolt pattern. so all i have to do is find the front brakes off of a f1? can i buy this stuff new from a parts store??? what all do i need? just the drum? or do i need everything? if so what?
As Barry said you need everything from the backing plate on out. That includes backing plate, braking mechanism and drum. The spindles are the same so all the 12" stuff from the F2 can be replaced with the 11" F1 setup. Beware, new F1 front drums are pretty spendy - pick out another bank
You might check the classified ads here or ebay for someone getting rid of an F1 front end. Happens frequently when they swap in an IFS front end.
I have a 48 F1 and a 52 F2. From what I can tell they're the same except for springs, wheel bolt pattern and a little longer frame in the box area. The changes you're looking at should be relatively simple. Have fun and welcome to FTE.
Before you spend a lot of money for marginal old original F-1 brakes, you might want to look around at some disc brake kits. Since the F1-F2-F3 front spindles are the same a disc brake kit for an F-1 should also fit and they are available with a 5 on 5.5 pattern to match your rear. Also, I seem to remember someone using F-150 rotors and calipers on a straight axle but I don't remember the details. You may have to make your own caliper bracket. Of course, if you are trying to keep it somewhat original then the F-1 brakes are the way to go...you just have to drag your feet a lot to stop...
Oh,...and welcome to the best old Ford truck site this side of anywhere!

I have to agree with Vern. Because you are changing the trans and rearend, you obviously aren't looking for a concours restoration. I would contact ECI for one of their disk brake kits. Depending on your budget and skills, you can buy the entire kit or just buy the basic kit which gives you their brackets and bearings required to mount F150 rotors. Then you go to your favorite parts store locally and purchase rotors and calipers and save on shipping those parts across country to you. Might even be cheaper than trying to piece together F1 drum brakes and the disks are much safer. You will need a dual-chambered master cylinder with this swap. I would recommend one of those even if you left the stock brakes on th etruck!
ECI Engineered Components Inc
CPP Classic Performance Parts
MPB Master Power Brakes
Also do a search of this forum, as several members here have done this swap and can give first-hand info on the different suppliers. May hear what they like/dislike about each. The search option will open up worlds of info that has been discussed here.
