Having trouble with an apparent fuel starvation under load
(up hills/acceleration). Engine is 360 w/ about 700 miles on rebuild. Rebuilt the 2V carb, replaced fuel lines/pump/filters
and still getting the problem. Possibly electric tank valve or
maybe some crud in tank? Appreciate any thoughts, been fighting it for a couple of months now.
I had an issue with the pickup line in the tank. Mine had corroded a small hole at the tank wall just on the other side of the hook up. Ran like a champ at idle but once I gave it some gas it would start to draw too much air into the fuel and starve the carb. Letting off the gas would allow the pump to just fill the bowls enough to keep it running. I ended up capping off the bad pickup line and installing my own using a length of 3/8 aluminum tubing, a 90 fire wall fitting, and a couple of b-nuts. Quite simple to do if you have the parts laying around or can get yur hands on them. Best way to find the hole is to install a clear fuel filter on the pickup line connection and start the truck. let if idle and look for air bubbles. Hopefully this gives a direction to start with.
Not to hijack this thread... but on the cannister type fuel filters, are the clear plastic ones better? My cannister has had problems sealing and was very tough to get just right. I was thinking about getting a clear plastic fuel filter. Thoughts?
Clear plasitc is ok. You have to worry about cracking after a long time depending on where the filter is located. I use the proform glass filters myself. They aren't too expensive plus you can open the filter up to see what is in your gas. I just mounted mine with a set of rubber cover clamps on the frame under the cab.
