Well, I have done it. I have traded my beloved red '04 F150 FX4 coupe for a '07 Ranger fully optioned 4cyl extra cab. I am losing a 300hp 4X4. But tires will be 2/3's less, oil change 3/7's less, 40% better gas mileage and I am gaining leather seats in the Ranger. I have had 7 F150's and this is my 4th Ranger. I don't know if I should be happy or I should go throw up in a garbage can? I wish gas was still under $2.00 and I wouldn't have done this.
Sure, it's gonna be slow. But gas mileage will be great. Did you get the auto? It'll be a real dog if you did. But the 2.3L is reliable, so I wouldn't expect many problems.
I feel the pain! I ordered my 150 in '02, it's exactly the way I wanted it, so I don't feel as though I can give it up (plus the GF loves it!). However, I wish I had something more efficient right now, I miss my '98 ranger 2.5l 4x2, on the highway I could get 27-28, much better than 17 max! I say enjoy the $40 fill-ups and driving past more stations between fills, it may not win any races, but speed doesn't matter if you can't feed it right?!?!?
Man, oh, man! I love the '04 and up model F150 FX4's, but I tell you, my friends who have a 2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab, Chevy 1500, 2500, and F250's envy the h*ll out of the gas millage my FX4 Ranger gets! Be Proud!
If I had the extra dough for a FX4 F150 I'd go for it, but it's not at all economical and my Ranger does all I need it to do.
If I am on the road and hold the tach below 2000rpm's, I can get 18mpg. Real world is 15 to 16mpg. All is not lost though. Before the Ranger comes in, a buddy and I are road tripping out to South Dakota for a few days and splitting the gas costs. Kind of a going away trip.
I would of split the difference and got a ranger sc 4x4 with the 4.0, i'm getting in the 20's with mine, but it's a manual. 150's are nice, but I don't need a truck that big for a daily driver. The ranger is sporty, fast, and very offroad capable, plus it's easy to manuver. I have a super duty for pulling my camper, and stuff, but even at that, it turns in ti an expensive camping trip.
don't feel too bad. alot of people around here are doing the same or parking their money spenders and buying little four bangers.
its $3.23 and higher in areas. pretty soon it'll be like it is in europe. my buddies brother hasn't driven his excursion v10 in two months!
These guy's are right, I have no idea where gas prices are gonna level off at, so there's alot to be said for a 4 banger. We could be in trouble as a nation, with the poor and middle income being hurt the most.
