I am getting a burning rubber smell at the rear axle. This is on a 2001 F350 Dually Diesel. Have recently replaced the transmission (180K), rear axle seals, and brake shoes. Still getting this burned rubber smell. I am thinking the rear calipers may not be releasing, keeping the shoes in contract w/rotor. Any ideas?
Have you checked for discoloration of the rotor? If it is being overheated due to the caliper being stuck, it will turn colors.
Have you replaced the tires lately? Are you sure the dual wheels are not rubbing against each other?
That was the first thing that I thought of. If this is the problem you need a spacer between the inner and outer rear wheels. If not, boy what a blow out!!!!!!
Just another thought, do you have an air bag set up on the rear?
Also, do you have an after market exhaust, may be on the spare tire?
What size tires are you running... and if they arent stock you should check tire pressure on all 4. If they are really low they may be rubbing each other!
yes i had the same problem the caliper is sticking on the slides. Also its a great idea to flush the brake fluid out since you have the dual piston caliper. moisture will get trap to the bottom and warm cold temps will cause the pistons on the bottom of the calipers to seize.
