I have a 98 Mountaineer, around 100,000 miles. The tranny won't shift past second. When in drive, it shifts 1-2 normal, then holds 2nd for a long time, revs high, then it'll finally shift to 3, but it's like it's in Neutral, nothing happens. I did get it to shift to 3rd a couple of times by manually shifting from D to N then back to D while it revs.
Any ideas? I'd rather not rebuild it, but will do so if needed.
I’m no where near an expert, but one time I blew a tranny hose. The first thing I noticed was that I lost drive when the fluid level dropped, then I lost second and I only barely made it to a wide spot in first.
if the fluid isnt burnt then i would start with a 2-3 accumulator piston.if you cant get 3rd then you wont have 4th due to the fact that 3rd gear clutches are also used in 4th gear.if this dosnt fix it then you could have some other problems.
Thanks guys. Yes, it has plenty of fluid, but it is a little bit dark. I wish it had a drain plug..
I've also heard that the 2-3 accumulator spring could have broken. I'll give it a look when I get a chance.
i myself have done many of these trans and havent seen the 2-3 spring break but have seen the 1-2 spring break.if you drop the pan the valve body must come out to even check the 2-3 piston.if you change the 2-3 accum. piston then i would also update the 1-2 which dosnt requier a valve body drop.
I think I'll probably just buy a whole rebuild kit and rebuild the whole thing, that way I'll know exactly what's in it. I just finished doing a 700R4, so I guess I get to do a ford tranny now.
