After reading much of the related discussion on this forum, I've decided to replace the worn out POS M5OD in my 95 F150 with a ZF. I called a large distributor of used parts, and got a price of $800, with a 2 day delivery. Then I called a smaller outfit, with mostly local connections, and got a price of $900, with a 6 month guarantee. Certified Transmission is going to get back to me - someday. In the meantime, they are more than willing to take my truck for a test drive, to analyze the problem, and give me an estimate I don't want for the repair of a transmission I don't want.
Next, I called a local tranny shop (works on race cars, and everything). They were curious about why I would want to change out the tranny instead of repair it. They said the ZF comes with a drive-line brake, and has 3 different bells available. And, it was never connected to a 300 six. No core would also up the price. What about the clutch and the drive shaft? They thought it over and called me back with a price of $2200 -$2500. They still thought I was a little nuts - ZFs come in there all the time, so they aren't much better, they told me.
So now I have a slight twinge of a doubt in my mind - what if the ZF really isn't any better?
